Pacific Rim Trailer

Giant monsters. Giant robots. No, this isn’t your standard Godzilla/Cloverfield/Power Rangers/Super Sentai/Neon Genesis Evangelion/Voltron/Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann/Gundam/etc (delete where appropriate) flick. This is something… different. Good different.

Visionary director Guillermo del Toro brings us Pacific Rim, a film that has said giant monsters battling said giant robots in an ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny. Pacific Rim is very much a homage, a love letter to Kaiju cinema – the Japanese genre of giant monster movies. Pacific Rim deals with giant monsters on the warpath, threatening big cities and humanity with their paths of destruction.

With said giant monsters causing mass panic and chaos, humanity chooses to fight back, and what better way to do so than by creating equally giant and deadly robots controlled by human pilots, in a very symbiotic nature similar to that seen in works such as Evangelion.

A trailer was recently released for the film after several viral teaser images and videos and not to spoil much, it looks brilliant:

Del Toro is certainly a brilliant director for this job. With his vision, the monsters and the world created in Pacific Rim look to be true to del Toro’s style, not to mention with his passion for cinema behind such a homage to a classic genre, Pacific Rim looks to tick so many boxes.

A plot synopsis follows below:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Very cool stuff. The film also boasts a brilliant cast, including Idris Elba who delivers the voice over in the trailer above and Ron Perlman, who has worked with del Toro several times before, namely the Hellboy movies.

Overall Pacific Rim looks like a very exciting flick to look out for. If the brilliant concept doesn’t sell you on it, just look at the footage. If that hasn’t sold you, realise that this is directed by Guillermo del Toro, one of the most visionary and accomplished directors out there. If that hasn’t sold you, look to the brilliant cast assembled for the movie. And if you still aren’t sold… then you better watch out, because this just might be a Kaiju that’s going to destroy at the box office.

Pacific Rim is set for a July 12th 2013 release. It stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba and Rinko Kikuchi. Guillermo del Toro directs, and the screenplay is written by Travis Beacham.
