Studio Ghibli’s next two films for 2013

Distributor Toho announced that Studio Ghibli will be releasing two new films next year.

The first will be directed by Hayao Miyazaki, his first since directing Ponyo in 2008. Titled Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Has Risen), it tells the story of Jiro Hirokoshi, the designer of the World War II Zero Fighter plane. It is based on Miyazaki’s own Manga which was published in Model Graphix magazine in 2009, and also on Tatsuo Hori’s novel of the same name.

The second film is Kaguya-hime no-Monogatari (The Story of Princess Kaguya). It is to be directed by Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata, who hasn’t directed a feature film since 1999’s My Neighbours The Yamadas. The story focuses on moon princess Kaguya-hime who is discovered as a baby asleep inside the stalk of a glowing bamboo plant.

Posters for both Kaze Tachinu and Kaguya-hime no-Monogatari were revealed on their official sites. While it has been revealed that both films are to be released in Japan over the summer on the same day (possibly as a double bill), an actual release date has not been set.

It could be a long while before we get to view both films on the big screen here in the UK. StudioCanal (previously Optimum Releasing) distributed Studio Ghibli’s last film Arrietty in the UK with an English dub featuring a British cast.
