James Gunn shoots down Guardians of the Galaxy casting rumours

Last week rumours were being thrown around that Zachary Levi (Chuck) was in the running for the lead role in Guardians of the Galaxy as Star-Lord. He wasn’t among the initial names that had auditioned for the role but had supposedly impressed Marvel with his work on the next Thor.

Lee Pace, Eddie Redmayne and Joel Edgerton had all tested for the film alongside Jim Sturgess who had (supposedly) been the one to make it through.

Soon after Variety had reported on this director James Gunn went on to Facebook to debunk the news. He announced, “Almost everything in that Variety article on the Guardians of the Galaxy casting (and all the following articles based on it) was/is completely inaccurate. Just for the record.”

The writer of the article, Jeff Sneider was a tad irritated about this and went on to his Twitter to say “Also weird how Sturgess and Levi never denied it, and neither did Marvel. Maybe James isn’t on the same page as everyone else…”

Afterwards Gunn deleted his original message and in response Sneider said “Ah yes, the old ‘a posting he later removed.’ Believe me, if there was something grossly inaccurate, some1 would have called to bitch & moan.”

Casting rumours aren’t exactly a new thing and sadly not everything that gets posted on websites and printed in newspapers is true. So was it fair of James Gunn to post the message he did? Neither of the two men were acting very professionally but this isn’t the first time James Gunn has caused offence.

Back in November Gunn was forced to remove something from his personal blog. It was supposed to be a satirical piece but its crude language and poor taste left people outraged. James Gunn issued a public apology but it’s surprising that this didn’t affect his job with Marvel.

Right now there is no solid casting news to report and even if James Gunn has said the article was inaccurate, just how inaccurate was it really?

Guardians of the Galaxy is due for release the 1st of August 2014.
