Duncan Jones to Direct Warcraft Movie

It’s a time for MMO gamers to rejoice, because Duncan Jones has signed on to direct the Warcraft movie for Legendary Pictures. If you don’t recognise the name, he’s a British director whose film Moon won multiple awards (including a Bafta). The job had initially been offered to Sam Raimi and his name was attached to the project for quite some time but he eventually stepped down. This was supposedly due to a clash with his Oz film.

A script for the movie has already been written by Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamond) and is currently being kept hidden away from prying eyes. The Warner Bros based production company is aiming to start shooting in autumn of this year with a release date of somewhere in 2015. With Avengers 2, Justice League and now this, it really is going to be an awesomely geeky year for movies.

There are also rumours that Johnny Depp is being eyed up for a lead role, but even if that proves to be true, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’ll happen.

This will be an interesting one to keep an eye on, especially when story elements start to emerge. Warcraft has a large world with multiple races and hundreds of characters. There is also a pile of books that accompany the games and lots of stories to pick from. So will this be a war story between the Horde and the Alliance? Or a tale of forbidden love between a Tauren and a Gnome? (Wow that would be awkward). But let’s just hope it won’t be about the Pandas.

For the Horde!
