Gabe Newell Speaks at LBJ University

Gabe Newell (aka ‘Gaben’), founder of Valve Corporation and all-round good egg recently visited the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs in Texas to give a talk on productivity, economics, political institutions and the future of corporations.

Someone has now posted the entire hour long speech online and, if you have the time, it’s a fascinating watch.

Gabe talks about his past career at Microsoft, the founding of his company, Valve’s policy against using job titles and cubicles, making the eyes look right in Half-Life and, of course, the similarities between the drug trade and selling hats in Team Fortress 2.

Valve has long been beloved on the internet and in the gaming community for being different from other companies and after hearing this speech, it’s not difficult to see why. Gabe Newell set out from the beginning to create a unique way of developing and selling games and, 17 years later, that’s still why we all love Valve.
