Quantic Dream Reveal PS4 Engine Tech Demo

On the PS3 Quantic Dream made a name for themselves as the go to developer for games that emphasise emotive storytelling, beautifully realistic humans that manage not to encounter issues with the uncanny valley and the kind games that push the console to its limits. From Heavy Rain and its focus on the emotional story of a father trying to rescue his son, to the upcoming Beyond: Two Souls, Quantic Dream know how to make games that are as close to interactive movies as we’re realistically going to get. Even their Kara Tech demo video managed to get huge amounts of buzz online for the amazingly well crafted story it told and the emotion it conveyed.

During the Sony PlayStation meeting we were able to see Quantic Dream’s David Cage talk about the studio’s vision for the newly announced PS4, as well as showing us a brief glimpse of the studio’s new PS4 engine. Before you take a look at the video, bear in mind that in 1999 characters were made of 350 polygons, Heavy Rain’s characters were 15,000, Beyond: Two Souls’ characters will have 30,000 and this new engine is working with an unspecified but much larger number.

The most interesting part of the video is how well emotions are being portrayed in the tech demo. The more subtly we can get in our video game characters, the closer we get to the day where the average consumer sees video games as a valuable art form.

What do you think? Are you impressed by the footage? What kind of game do you think Quantic Dream are working on for the Ps4? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
