Kickstarter for a Veronica Mars movie launched

Veronica Mars

Kristen Bell is an actress currently seen in things like Showtime’s House of Lies and before that has appeared in the Assassin’s Creed series voicing the character Lucy Stillman. However, she is probably most known for her role in the cult show Veronica Mars playing the eponymous character.

Veronica Mars was a cult neo-noir held by many to be a true highlight of television. Writers such as Joss Whedon and Kevin Smith have praised the show (as well as having cameos in episodes) for its wonderful writing and production value. While the show only lasted for three seasons, it continues to be a cult hit with audiences.

Which brings things to today’s news: There is a Kickstarter to get a Veronica Mars movie off the ground. The website has been known to get many a project out there, and while there are both successes and failures with Kickstarter, this looks to be a very successful one.

How successful? Well for one thing the amount of money sought to fund a Veronica Mars movie on Kickstarter is $2 million. Given the nature and history of Kickstarter, $2 million usually sounds like a lot of money, but at the time of writing, $1,494,949* has been pledged.

And the Kickstarter began today.

Visiting the page allows you to see what rewards are being offered, which is standard Kickstarter practice, but the real highlight is reuniting Bell with her Veronica Mars co-stars in a light-hearted, self-aware video announcing the project.

The Kickstarter may be looking for a modestly sized budget for a film, but indie is certainly the way to go for a Veronica Mars film. Warner Bros. owns Veronica Mars, but part of the reason the Kickstarter is in place is to show them that there is an audience for the film, set to continue the Veronica Mars story for one last case.

It looks as if things are going to be successful very swiftly, and as such, series creator Rob Thomas has left a small hint of what could possibly come:

“Life has taken Veronica away from Neptune. In the years since spoiling Keith’s chances to be reelected sheriff, Veronica hasn’t taken a case. But something big is about to bring her back home and back to her calling. My goal is to include as many of your favorite characters as possible. It is, after all, time for Veronica’s 10-year high school reunion.”

For more information one can visit the official Kickstarter page, where the history of the movie and the actual setup of the Kickstarter is outlined. Warner Bros. is set to market, promote, and distribute the movie if fan interest is high enough, and that definitely seems to be the case.

Here’s looking towards probably the most successful film project on Kickstarter to date, and hopefully a triumphant return to the world of Veronica Mars.

Now… what’s it gonna take to get a Pushing Daisies film project on Kickstarter?
