Evil Dead II Special Edition Blu-Ray Review

The words ‘Cult’ and ‘Classic’ are thrown around all too easily these days when it comes to movies, and more often than not, the movie being described is undeserving of that title. One that does deserve this honour is Sam Raimi’s 1987 horror-comedy classic Evil Dead II. The lovely people at StudioCanal are treating us the fans with a glorious, gore filled special edition Blu-Ray. “Groovy.”

Evil Dead II is without doubt the quintessential horror-comedy, fast passed and with a non-stop flow of wonderfully gory silliness, the occasional jump out of your seat moment and more laughs than a possessed cabin in the woods.

Whilst visiting a secluded cabin deep within the woods, Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his girlfriend Linda (Denise Bixler) stumble across the audio recordings of Professor Knowby, in which he recites passages from ‘The Book of the Dead’. Curious, they play the tape, but once spoken those ancient words awake that which once was and evil supernatural powers are unleashed upon the two love birds, turning Linda into a monstrous deadite that tries to kill Ash. When the Professor’s daughter Annie (Sarah Berry) arrives with some friends, the night turns into a non-stop bloodbath with shotguns, demons, laughing deer heads, flying eyeballs and of course an evil hand. Will our chainsaw wielding hero Ash help them survive through to morning, or will they all be dead by dawn?

This new special edition Blu-Ray looks incredible with the all new beautifully re-mastered 1080p/AVC transfer and an ear pleasing 5.1 DTS – HD Master Audio track, which is a huge step up from the terribly disappointing previous Blu-Ray release. But wait, there’s more. Not only has Evil Dead II been given an audio-visual face lift, but the Blu-Ray is also jam packed with all new special features.

Swallowed Souls: The Making of Evil Dead II is an all new eight part documentary that sheds new light on every aspect of the construction of the movie. With insight from almost everyone involved with the film, be they in front or behind the camera, this 100 plus minute documentary is worth the price alone.

Cabin Fever collects a series of production videos, including outtakes and deleted scenes, and stuff that just didn’t make the final cut. Road to Westboro is a short look at the movie’s shooting location. There is also archive footage and a photo gallery.

The audio commentary may be the same as on the previous release, but that’s fine as writer and director Sam Raimi, co-writer Scott Spiegel, star Bruce Campbell and special makeup effects artist Greg Nicotero do a wonderful job.

What more could you want. Evil Dead II Special Edition Blu-ray is a must have for all fans of the franchise, and will be available to own from April 15th, so buy it.

Oh and if for some ridiculous reason you have never seen it, then what are you waiting for, pre-order your copy and “Join Us” you won’t regret it.
