Pacific Rim Featurette – Guillermo Del Toro Talks

As Pacific Rim‘s release date draws ever nearer, the hype amongst Del Toro fans continues to build. A new featurette, entitled “Under Attack” was added to the growing list of trailers and short videos already available on YouTube.

The new video, shown below, sees cast members Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam talk about characterisation in the film. Towards the end, Del Toro himself also makes an appearance to explain his approach to the story and some of its major themes.

Despite its show of extravagant CGI robots and monsters, by far the most interesting about thing about this clip is its focus on the human element of the story. In any lesser director’s hands, it would be all too easy for Pacific Rim to become just another CGI-tastic monster movie, but if there’s anyone who can pull this off without falling back on clichés, it’s Guillermo Del Toro. Here, he explains his attempts to blend and build on existing sub-genres in order to create something new.

In addition, he’s pieced together an exciting cast from around the world to help bring the characters to life, including big-name stars like Idris Elba and Ron Perlman, a handful of rising British actors like Charlie Hunnam (Queer as Folk, Children of Men, Sons of Anarchy) and Burn Gorman (Torchwood, The Hour), and young Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi. The film even features Ellen McLain (GlaDos in the Portal series) as the voice of the Jaeger A.I. computer.

Pacific Rim is scheduled for release on Friday 12 July. Let’s hope it lives up to expectations!
