tumblr_mt2fosxL0J1s2kalqo1_400In the latest Pokémon X and Y press release a whole range of human and Pokémon characters have been revealed, as well as a few new in-game features.

First off, we now know the first evolved forms of each of the three starter Pokémon, Chespin, Froakie and Fennekin. Chespin will evolve into Quilladin, the Spiny Armour Pokémon, whose hard spikes and solid shell provide high levels of defence, making it able to easily withstand being hit with the force of a tractor or truck. Although it never seeks out battles, if attacked, it will use its sharp spikes to fight back. Quilladin can learn the move Mud Shot, useful for battling Fire-type Pokémon which usually present a big problem for Grass types.

Froakie will evolve into Frogadier, the Bubble Frog Pokémon, whose excellent jumping skills enable it to leap up to 2000 feet into the air. Frogadier evades its foes by jumping up into trees or leaping tumblr_mt2fs474p31s2kalqo1_400around ceilings. It can learn the Flying-type move Bounce, which will help this Water-type Pokémon to deal with usually problematic Grass-type foes.

Meanwhile Fire-type Pokémon Fennekin will evolve into Braixen, which keeps a twig tucked away in its tail. This twig is used to calm the Pokémon’s mind, and can also be set aflame for use in battle. Fennekin fans who’ve been hoping for a Fire/Psychic-type evolution will be pleased to hear that Braixen can learn the move Psyshock, although its type(s) have not yet been confirmed. Psyshock is super effective against Pokémon with high Special Defence stats.

tumblr_mt2g6faaDa1s2kalqo1_400There’s also more news about the new Mega Evolution feature, which has caused some controversy amongst fans. We now know that the powerful Dragon/Ground type Pokémon Garchomp will have a Mega form, as well as all three of the final evolutions of the Kanto starter Pokémon: we can look forward to seeing Mega Charizard, Mega Blastoise and Mega Venusaur. In addition to this, it’s also been revealed that Mewtwo will have not only one but two Mega forms, Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo tumblr_mt2g4nTvjd1s2kalqo7_400Y. Which form it takes will presumably depend on which version of the game players choose, though this has yet to be confirmed. In the trailer below, we get a glimpse into how Mega Evolution will look in battle: the player character appears to activate a device worn around his or her wrist which somehow induces the evolution process.

tumblr_mt2g1hL9fK1s2kalqo2_400Five more new Pokémon are introduced in the latest trailer, including two which will be recreated from fossils, similarly to Pokémon such as Omanyte, Kabuto and Aerodactyl in previous games. tumblr_mt2g1hL9fK1s2kalqo1_400These two will be called Tyrunt, which is obtained using the Jaw Fossil, and Amaura, obtained from the Sail Fossil. We don’t yet know the types of these Pokémon, but judging from appearances, Dragon seems a likely bet for both. Other new Pokémon are Pyroar, Meowstic and Furfrou, all of which can appear in different forms. The appearances of both Meowstic and Pyroar (the evolved form of Litleo) vary according to the Pokémon’s gender. Much like a lion, the male form of Fire type Pokémon Pyroar will possess a huge mane.

tumblr_mt2fzmCwJk1s2kalqo1_400The differences between the two forms of Psychic Pokémon Meowstic, meanwhile, seem to be still more pronounced, with its female form being better at outright attacks such as Extrasensory, and its male form being more suited to supportive moves such as Miracle Eye, which allows future moves to hit tumblr_mt2fzmCwJk1s2kalqo2_250regardless of an opponent’s evasion tactics. Meowstic is the Constraint Pokémon, and is known to show little emotion openly. Finally, Poodle Pokémon Furfrou can be groomed into different styles, with more styles becoming available the more often it is groomed. A schedule will alert players to the frequency of their grooming, and if left untended, Furfrou’s fur will become long and shaggy, restoring the Pokémon to its original appearance. Furfrou is said to be very loyal and intelligent, and is known to have protected the king of the Kalos region in ancient times. This last new Pokémon seems likely to be part of the new Fairy-type group, since we know that it is able to learn the Fairy-type move Baby-Doll Eyes, a move that allows the user to attack first, regardless of the opponent’s speed.

tumblr_mt2g4gIeNv1r8sc3ro4_400As well as grooming their Pokémon, trainers will also be able to alter their own appearance by visiting salons and boutiques all over Kalos. Each town and city has its own unique style, allowing players to change their hairstyles, clothing and Player Search System icons.

New type features will render certain kinds of Pokémon immune to particular attacks. Grass types will now be resistant to powder and spore moves, Electric types will be immune to paralysis, and Ghost types will no longer be affected by moves which prevent fleeing.

tumblr_mt2gajFtIC1s2kalqo1_400Finally, a number of new human characters have been introduced, including five members of Team Flare, and movie star trainer Diantha. Diantha is famous and well-loved throughout Kalos for her acting roles, but she’s also a skilled Pokémon trainer, with a keen interest in fellow trainers who show lots of potential. Meanwhile five scientist characters make up the driving force behind the mysterious Team Flare. This group of five is composed of one man, the orange-haired Xerosic, and four women: purple-haired Celosia, blue-haired Mable, orange-haired Aliana and green-haired Bryony. Similarly to Team Galactic’s, their goal is a world-changing one, rather than self-serving like Team Rocket’s in the early games, though what it is they’re after remains to be seen.
