Marvel Takes its Iconic Characters to the Stage

It’s not enough for Marvel that they’re pretty much Kings of the Box Office right now. Or that they’ve succeeded in print, games, live TV and cartoons. Now Marvel are working on something just a little bit special. With the help of Feld Entertainment they’ll be bringing two dozen superheroes to the stage. Acrobats, martial artists and a full stunt team will be essential in bringing the Marvel heroes to life on stage.

Some might recall that the last time Marvel put one of its characters on stage it didn’t exactly work out so well. “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark” was a troubled production that made huge losses (with some claiming it would have to fill every seat, every night for 10 years to make its money back). There was generally mixed feelings towards the final product. It had one or two catchy tunes but made some strange decisions regarding its story. Though everyone had to admit that seeing Spider-Man swing over the audience was pretty darn cool.

There hasn’t been many details yet on how “Marvel Universe Live!” will play out. The official website suggests that there will be a story involved (rather than just an acrobatics display) and shows what looks like the Tesseract. This familiar object might encourage a few more cinema-goers to come and watch but it’s likely the story will take its inspiration from the comic universe. A stage production wouldn’t have to worry about character rights either, which means this could be a unique chance to see Wolverine, Spider-Man and Captain America all in one place.

Marvel Universe Live!” will tour 28 North American cities in 2014. Time differences will most likely count out any chance of a live-stream to UK cinemas. But let’s hope that a successful run will at least lead a stint in the West End.
