Winter is Coming – and so is a Game of Thrones Video Game

Confirming rumours which began back in November, Walking Dead game-creators Telltale announced that they are working on a Game of Thrones video game in a brief but intriguing teaser shown at this year’s VGX.

Like previous TV- and comics-inspired Telltale Games titles, The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, the upcoming Game of Thrones game (or games) will take the form of an episodic series. According to HBO‘s Josh Goodstadt, it will “bring a whole new dimension to the world of Westeros”.

How faithful it will stay to either George R. R. Martin‘s books or their sister TV series remains to be seen, though as Wired notes, the use of the television theme music in the trailer, along with the fact that the game is being developed in partnership with HBO, suggests that it will have strong ties to the show. Said Dan Connors, co-founder and CEO of Telltale Games:

“Working with HBO to develop a new game series based on ’Game of Thrones’ is a natural fit for our studio. This partnership will create an experience that will captivate the huge, global ’Game of Thrones’ audience. It will put them in control of the epic stories of warfare, intrigue, violence and revenge that we know and love.”

Telltale also released a trailer at VGX for their upcoming Tales from the Borderlands game which they are developing with the help of Borderlands-creators Gearbox. According to IGN, the game will feature both new characters and more familiar figures from the Borderlands universe.

Full release dates have not yet been announced, though Variety reports that Telltale “plans to release the first [Game of Thrones] title in 2014 as a digital release on videogame consoles, PC, Mac and mobile devices.”
