J.K. Rowling to produce Harry Potter stage play

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone novel coverAuthor J.K. Rowling has announced that she is to work on a play focusing on the early years of Harry Potter.

While Rowling will not be writing the play she will be onboard as a co-producer, collaborating on the production with British producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender. Rowling revealed that she had received numerous offers to turn Harry Potter into a stage play, but Friedman and Callender’s idea was “the only one that really made sense.” A writer and director are being considered as the play moves into development in 2014.

The story will be a prequel focusing on Harry’s early years as an orphan. Little else is known, but familiar characters from the books are set to feature.

Rowling said the following about the production in a statement released on her official site:

“Over the years I have received countless approaches about turning Harry Potter into a theatrical production, but Sonia and Colin’s vision was the only one that really made sense to me, and which had the sensitivity, intensity and intimacy I thought appropriate for bringing Harry’s story to the stage.  After a year in gestation it is exciting to see this project moving on to the next phase. I’d like to thank Warner Bros. for their continuing support in this project.”
