The Casual Vacancy Miniseries – HBO and BBC to Collaborate

jk_rowling_casual_vacancy_cover_a_pSet to air later this year, a TV adaptation of J. K. Rowling‘s crime novel, The Casual Vacancy, is being produced by the BBC in collaboration with HBO. Though the BBC has been developing the project for some time, the involvement of the American network was revealed this week by The Hollywood Reporter.

Along with the book’s author herself, the miniseries’ executive producers will include Paul Trijbits (Saving Mr. Banks, Dancing on the Edge, Jane Eyre) as well as Rick Senat and Neil Blair (Rowling’s literary agent) of The Blair Partnership, acting on behalf of Rowling’s own production company, Bronte Film and Television. Sarah Phelps (Eastenders, Great Expectations) is writing the script, while Ruth Kenley-Letts (The Hour) will produce and Jonny Campbell (In The Flesh, Ashes to Ashes) will direct. Harry Potter studios Warner Bros will also be responsible for distribution of the series outside of the UK.

Set in the quiet, West Country town of Pagford, The Casual Vacancy begins with the sudden death of Parish Councillor Barry Fairbrother, which necessitates the election of a successor to the post. As hopeful candidates battle it out for the newly opened vacancy, however, dark secrets begin to come to light, revealing a hidden world of conflict lurking beneath Pagford’s peaceful façade.

Production is scheduled to begin in South West England this summer, with the series set to be broadcast on BBC One in the UK later this year.
