Speeding into Cinemas: Sony and Sega to Make a Sonic the Hedgehog Film

Gaming’s most famous blue hedgehog is set to speed his way onto the big screen, thanks to a collaboration between Sony Pictures Entertainment and the SEGA SAMMY Group’s Marza Animation Planet.

Produced by Neal H. Moritz (22 Jump Street, Fast and FuriousI Am Legend) under his Original Film banner alongside Takeshi Ito (Sonic: Night of the Werehog, Wagaya no Oinari-sama) and Mie Onishi for Marza, the as-yet untitled Sonic the Hedgehog movie will seek to “capture Sonic’s irreverent tone and spirit”, and will feature a range of other favourite characters from the franchise including Sonic’s arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman. So far, no director is officially attached, but Toby Ascher will serve as executive producer, and the script is currently being written by duo Evan Susser and Van Robichaux.

President of Production at Columbia Pictures Hannah Minghella, who is overseeing the project for Sony with Andrea Giannetti, said:

“There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog and a built-in international fan base. Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before.”

As of yet, we’ve been given very little information regarding the story and how far, if at all, it will tie in with any of the Sonic the Hedgehog video games or existing spin-off TV series. What we do know, however, is that it will be a hybrid CG and live action movie – slightly worrying, since these are never an easy to pull off, but it’s perhaps best to reserve judgement until more details have been revealed.

To date, Sonic the Hedgehog has featured in more than 70 video games which, combined, have sold over 140 million copies worldwide. The character will also be making a return to the small screen this autumn in a new CG animated series called Sonic Boom, set to debut on Cartoon Network in the US. Evan Bailey and Bill Freiberger (The Simpsons, Drawn Together) will act as showrunners on the series.

Said Marza Animation Planet CEO Masanao Maeda:

“Sonic has had dozens of adventures on the console and the small screen, and we’re thrilled that he’s now coming to the big screen. Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we’re confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him.”
