Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: New Mega Evolutions and Gameplay Footage

In a press release yesterday, Nintendo revealed some exciting new gameplay footage from its upcoming Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire titles, including clips of the Diancie, Swampert and Sceptile Mega Evolutions that we previously reported on, as well as a first look at Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre.

In addition to new images and video, the official announcement includes details of the abilities that these Pokémon will gain in their Mega forms. First up, Mega Swampert boasts an improved Attack stat, further boosting the power of its fighting type move Hammer Arm. It also has the ability Swift Swim, which doubles its speed in rainy weather. Mega Sceptile, meanwhile, gains the ability Lightning Rod, which absorbs damage from Electric type moves to raise its own Special Attack stat. Perhaps even more interestingly, it also gains the Dragon type, rendering the Dragon type moves that Sceptile can already learn even more effective. Finally, legendary Pokémon Diancie is able to Mega Evolve only after being transferred from Pokémon X or Y onto Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire. The Mega Evolution process causes all impurities on Diancie’s rocky body to fade away, leaving it sparkling so brilliantly that it is impossible for anyone to look directly at it. Mega Diancie can use the Fairy type move Dazzling Gleam, which unleashes powerful beams of light onto opponents. In Double Battles, this move will strike both opposing Pokémon. Elsewhere, the announcement also mentions “a mysterious and elegant young man”, who helps the player to discover more about Mega Evolution:

“Players will also befriend Steven, a mysterious and elegant young man with a great interest in collecting rare stones. He recognises the player’s talent and wants to lend his help in the pursuit of the true story behind the origins of Mega Evolution and the Legendary Pokémon.”

Although it’s not stated explicitly, the press release includes images of  Hoenn Pokémon League champion Steven Stone, meaning it’s more than likely that Nintendo have taken advantage of his apt second name to link him to Mega Stones and the processes of Mega Evolution and Ancient Devolution.

Lastly, an interesting image has emerged online from E3, featuring a series of silhouettes which may be a hint at more soon-to-be-revealed Mega Evolutions for Ludicolo, Tyranitar, Sharpedo, Camerupt, Flygon, Zangoose, Seviper, Salamence and Metagross. Check it out:

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will be released on 28th November this year. What are you most looking forward to about the games? Are there any other Pokémon you would like to see acquire Mega Evolution capabilities? Let us know in the comments!
