CBBC are Rebooting Danger Mouse

dangermouseHe’s the greatest, he’s fantastic and he’s finally making a comeback! It’s been announced that a reboot of iconic kids’ cartoon series Danger Mouse is set to air on CBBC more than 20 years after its cancellation in 1992.

Created by Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall of Cosgrove Hall animation studios (also responsible for producing Count Duckula, Chorlton and the Wheelies and Jamie and the Magic Torch), the original series ran for a little over 10 years on ITV, with voices provided by David Jason, Terry Scott, Edward Kelsey, Brian Trueman and Jimmy Hibbert.

There’s no word yet on which actors will be lending their vocal talents to the reboot, but according to The Metro, Stephen Fry is currently the bookies’ favourite to take on the mantle of the main mouse himself. Of course, it’s still possible that David Jason may reprise the role himself. Sadly though, the same cannot be said of his partner in crime-fighting Terry Scott (DM’s trusty sidekick, Penfold), who died in 1994.

Original creator Brian Cosgrove will be acting as a consultant on the new, 52-episode series, meaning that we’ll hopefully see some continuity bridging the 22-3 year gap. At the same time, however, there’ll be some significant changes, mostly in order to bring Danger Mouse up to date with contemporary technology. According to The Guardian, the hero’s headquarters will still be located in a traditional red postbox, but the interior will undergo a redesign, with all the up-to-date, hi-tech gadgets “befitting any modern action mouse”. A few new features will also be incorporated into DM’s own fairly minimalist attire, with his black eye patch transformed into an electronic “i-Patch“.

Said Cosgrove:

“When I helped to create Danger Mouse I had no idea the show would be such a huge success both in the UK and overseas. I am delighted that a whole new generation will be introduced to his daring deeds and thrilled to be part of this new 21st century series. I can’t wait to find out what he’s been up to for the last 23 years.”

CBBC Controller Cheryl Taylor, too, hopes that the reboot will enable the “much-loved duo” of Danger Mouse and Penfold to “win over a whole new generation of fans”, describing DM himself as “the last word in debonair and delightfully eccentric heroics”.
