Doctor Who Series 8 – Goodbye Clara, Hello Fan-Made Title Sequence

Watch_Peter_Capaldi_and_Jenna_Coleman_in_a_brand_new_Doctor_Who_series_8_trailerAfter 18 months playing “impossible girl” Clara Oswald, Jenna-Louise Coleman will finally step down from her role as the Doctor’s time-travelling companion.

Clara’s exit is said to be planned as part of a “sensational Christmas storyline” at the end of the upcoming 8th series of Doctor Who. By the time Coleman leaves the show, her character will have earned a place amongst its longest-standing companions. Speaking about the decision, a BBC source said:

“She has been absolutely brilliant in the role, but everyone agrees it is a part that should change after a period…It was very much a mutual decision. It’s important to keep the series moving and fast-paced, and the time is just starting to feel right and the feeling is that it could be a perfect Christmas storyline.”

So far, no information has been offered about how Clara will take her leave, but based on some comments made by Steven Moffat, it seems there’s a good chance it may have something to do with the Doctor’s regeneration into the new incarnation of the character as played by Peter Capaldi.

“He’s not as immediately approachable and he’s not necessarily looking for your approval,” said Moffat. “I would like to restore the sense that when he says, ‘Wait here, I’ll be back’, you really hope he’ll be back, but you’re not absolutely convinced. What he’s not doing is reassuring you very much…One of the watchwords we have this year is there are consequences for choosing to live like this. It’s not a fairy-tale – we want to make it feel that these adventures can hurt.”

In other, more cheery Doctor Who news, it’s been announced that the title sequence for Series 8 is to be based on an impressive fan video created by motion graphics specialist Billy Hanshaw, which you can check out below. The YouTube clip, which features spiralling clock faces and gears, as well as Peter Capaldi’s face emblazoned on a pocket watch, went viral online, racking up over 700,000 views.

The use of the video has been described by The Guardian as “perhaps the ultimate validation of Doctor Who fandom”. Said Steven Moffat:

“I happened to cross it, and it was the only new title idea I’d seen since 1963. We got in touch with him, and said, OK, we’re going to do that one.”

What do you think of Hanshaw’s title sequence? Will you be missing Clara? Let us know in the comments.
