That Sandman Movie is Still Happening, and Joseph Gordon Levitt May Be Directing

The_Sandman-_Endless_Nights_Poster_by_Frank_QuitelyRemember that Sandman adaptation that Warner Bros were supposed to be working on way back when? Well, if you were beginning to think that the movie you Desire was just the pipe Dream of filmmakers trapped in a Delirium, then Despair no more, for it seems its Destiny is neither development hell nor ultimate Death and Destruction, but in fact, it’s well on its way to getting made!

Recent comments from those on board not only suggest that things are going well, but also hint at the possibility that the film will be helmed by Joseph Gordon Levitt, who made a terrific directorial debut last year with Don Jon. Everyone’s current favourite indie director seems like the perfect person to take the reins of The Sandman (if not necessarily the most obvious choice for the title role, which he’s also rumoured to be assuming): his involvement alone was enough to sway many a sceptic previously unconvinced that the Neil Gaiman comic series could be successfully adapted for the screen. Here’s what Gordon Levitt had to say in a Reddit AMA a couple of days ago:

Been doing a lot of work with David Goyer and Jack Thorne, working on the screenplay. We’ve been doing our meetings at the DC office, which is a frickin rad place to work. Also just had a great conversation last week with David and Mr. Gaiman. Neil has been extremely big hearted with me, and he’s the one I want to please most.

JGL isn’t the only one to have broken the long silence on the film’s progress. Producer David S. Goyer also discussed the movie in an interview with Deadline published on Monday.

I hesitate to definitively say when it might go before the cameras,” he said. “But the one thing different between other iterations and ours is that Neil Gaiman has been in the room with us and is a vital part of the team… We have a draft Warners is very happy with and we’re moving forward, knock on wood.

There are plenty of good reasons why progress hasn’t been as fast as some fans might have hoped: there are some very busy people involved in the creation of this movie, from David S. Goyer to Gaiman himself. But based on what we’ve heard so far, it seems as though the wait will be well worth it.

Are you excited about the Sandman movie? Who would you like to see cast in it? Let us know in the comments.
