Benedict Cumberbatch is Magic: Sherlock Actor Cast as Doctor Strange

Dr_Strange_by_Steve_DitkoAn official announcement from Marvel has broken the news that British superstar Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play the medic-turned-magician Doctor Strange in an upcoming movie about the character.

For those as-yet unfamiliar with his story, Doctor Stephen Strange begins as an idealistic medic, who becomes increasingly cold-hearted and embittered following a series of tragic family incidents. Dedicating himself to intensive study at which he excels, he becomes a celebrated neurosurgeon before the age of 30, his arrogance, materialism and disregard for other people increasing all the while, until a terrible car accident changes his life forever.

Left unable to use his hands with the precision required for his profession, he loses his job, and is too proud to take on consulting or other work. After a whole range of medical procedures fail to change his condition, Faust-like, Strange turns to sorcery, and discovers a whole new world of magic and alternate dimensions.

Having built up quite a reputation as the go-to actor for mysterious and guarded intellectuals (both fictional and factual), Cumberbatch is an obvious choice for the part. In 2011, he played the role of a similarly jaded, fictional scientist seeking answers in Nick Dear’s stage adaptation of Frankenstein.

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” said Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

Scheduled for release in November 2016, the Doctor Strange film will be directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Deliver Us From Evil, The Day the Earth Stood Still), from a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Passengers).

In other Marvel news, Variety has also confirmed that Ryan Reynolds will return to his role as the world’s snarkiest superhero, Deadpool, in a long-awaited X-Men spinoff by Fox.

Reynolds previously took on the role of the much-loved character in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Expected in cinemas in February 2016, the Deadpool movie is being written by Rhett Reese (Monsters, Inc., Zombieland, Dinosaur) and Paul Wernick (Zombieland, G.I. Joe: Retaliation), and directed by Tim Miller. Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men series, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant) will produce.
