Could Assassination Classroom be the next big anime of 2015?

Assassination Classroom (studentandkoro)

Guns, tentacles, students tasked with killing their teacher… could Assassination Classroom have all the ingredients to becoming the next big anime of 2015? With a live action film and video game on the way, it could be a popular franchise in the making.

From animation studio Lerche and director Seiji Kishi, Assassination Classroom will be broadcast on Fuji TV in Japan from 9 January 2015, with FUNimation revealing that they will be streaming the series from the same date for North American audiences.

Based on the manga of the same name, it centres on Koro-sensei, a powerful alien who has taken on the form of an octopus. After destroying a good chunk of the moon, leaving it in a crescent-like state, he lands on Earth declaring that he will destroy the planet within a year. However, he offers humanity the opportunity to prevent this from happening. Working at the Kunugigaoka High School, Koro-sensei teaches the art of assassination to class 3-E in the hope that the students will be able to kill him, otherwise he will destroy the Earth.

The teaser trailer for the anime can be seen below:

Assassination Classroom (vol 1)While Japan has already provided us with a story of teenagers kitted out with weapons in Battle Royale, Assassination Classroom has a fantastically insane concept, with the survival of the Earth dependent on a class of misfits killing their teacher; a teacher who just happens to look like an octopus and is constantly smiling. Trying to kill Koro-sensei is made more difficult when the students slowly grow to like him.

The manga by Yusei Matsui started out in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2012. With Shueisha having published 11 complied volumes so far, it has become a top selling manga in Japan. Viz Media picked the licence up for an English language release and have recently released the first volume.

A live action film of Assassination Classroom is also on the way, with Koro-sensei appearing as a CG character in the film. Currently in post-production, it is directed by Eiichiro Hasumion and opens in Japan on 21 March 2015.

On top of an anime series and a film, Bandai Namco have a game in the works soon to be released on the Nintendo 3DS – Assassination Classroom: Grand Siege on Koro-sensei. Players take on the role of a student in class 3-E, setting traps and using weapons in the hope that they can take out Koro-sensei. There is currently no set release date but it is expected to be available in 2015.

So with Assassination Classroom set to take over in 2015, chances are that you’ll be seeing a Koro-sensei cosplay soon at your next convention.
