Scarlett Johansson to Star in Ghost in the Shell Movie

Whether taking their inspiration from MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft, or comic hall of famers like Batman and Superman, adaptations seem to be what’s “in” at the movies right now. One property we’ve been hearing whispers about for some time is finally headed for the big screen, with Dreamworks having cast Scarlett Johansson in their upcoming adaptation of Japanese classic cult anime Ghost in the Shell.

Set in the year 2029, Ghost in the Shell follows a Japanese intelligence department under the Ministry of Home Affairs as it attempts to stop a cyber-terrorist attack in Hong Kong. In the original anime, the main character, Major Motoko Kusanagi, is a cyborg. No stranger to science-fiction, Johansson should be perfect for the part, having previously taken on leading roles in 2012’s Her, 2013’s Under the Skin and last year’s Lucy.

The film will be directed by Rupert Sanders, with Avi Arad and Steven Paul producing. Mark Sourian is the executive producer, and Bill Wheeler is writing the script.
