Disney developing live-action “Mulan”

MulanFollowing the commercial success of its recent live-action retelling of Cinderella (which at time of writing has taken over $300 million globally), Disney is now reportedly developing a live-action adaptation of another of its animated classics, Mulan.

The company has purchased a script from writing team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek that focuses on the Chinese legend of the female warrior Hua Mulan, the same Mulan who was the central character in their 1998 animation. Since meeting in high school, Martin and Hynek have frequently collaborated, writing for Known Theatre of Cincinnati as well as rewriting scripts for Amazon Studios. In addition to the purchase, it is also understood that Chris Bender, J.C. Spink and Jake Weiner are attached to produce the project via their company Benderspink.

Whilst you would be forgiven for thinking that is an elaborate April Fool’s joke, or even an attempt by Disney to buy the script in order to bury it, the fact that the company is also working on live-action adaptations of Beauty and the Beast (starring Emma Watson), The Jungle Book and Dumbo (directed by Tim Burton) would seem to suggest that this is for real, and another Mulan movie is destined to hit our screens at some point in the near future. Only time and an official confirmation from the studio will tell, however: for now, all we can do is wait and hope for a film that does justice to the animated version we all know and love.

What do you think of this news? Are there any other animated Disney movies you’d like to see get the live-action treatment? Let us know in the comments below.
