Olivia Munn to play Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse

Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse is certainly gathering steam. The hotly anticipated sequel to last year’s Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse seeks to turn yet another iconic X-Men storyline into a high-stakes, big-budget movie.

Much like all films before it, X-Men: Apocalypse seems to be amassing even more of an ensemble of actors to play the brilliant catalogue of heroes and villains in the comic series’ roster.

The latest, as announced by Singer on his Instagram page in a post saying:

Excited to welcome @oliviamunn as Betsy Braddock! #Psylocke #XmenApocalypse #XMEN

Reveals to us that none other than comic book geek Olivia Munn shall finally make a transition to comic book movie, playing Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse. A curious choice, but certainly far from a worse or stranger one.

The addition of Psylocke is a welcome one, joining other fan-favourite characters in this instalment such as Jubilee and Angel. Psylocke and Angel have appeared before in the X-Men movie timeline, both having been seen in X-Men: The Last Stand. The previous film, Days of Future Past, however, all but erased that film from the canon. So it’s only right to see how the characters will be re-invented and portrayed by different, more prominent actors.

Munn has showcased her acting chops between films that haven’t been that brilliant. With a talent like Singer we’ll hopefully be getting more of the range seen in something like The Newsroom rather than… Mortdecai. Only time will tell. Plus there’s going to be a fair bit of pressure put on Munn to do justice to a character that’s in one of many – including this writer’s – lists of favourite X-Men characters.

We shall find out on May 27, 2016 when X-Men: Apocalypse is released. The screenplay is written by Simon Kinberg, Dan Harris, and Michael Dougherty, it’ll be directed by Bryan Singer, and it will feature an ensemble cast that’s not even limited to James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, Rose Byrne, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
