Pokémon the Movie: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages is set to air on Cartoon Network later this year.

The film will feature the mysterious genie-like Pokémon Hoopa, whose magic rings act as portals, transporting Legendary Pokémon from one place to another. In the Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire games, these portals can be accessed when Soaring through the sky with Eon Pokémon Latias and Latios, and are useful ways of capturing monsters not otherwise available in the Hoenn region. Based on the trailer, however, it looks like the portals cause some sort of mishap in the movie, dragging large numbers of Legendaries to a single location where they battle it out in an epic showdown, with only Hoopa able to stop the fighting.

The unveiling of the new trailer follows the release of a short teaser late last year. The teaser for the then-titled Pokémon the Movie XY emerged online shortly before Nintendo and GAME FREAK confirmed the involvement of Hoopa, who up until that point had only been discovered by fans through hacks and leaks.

The official press release gives the following synopsis:

“The 70-minute animated movie takes Ash, Pikachu, and their friends to a desert city by the sea. Here they meet the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa, which has the ability to summon all sorts of things—including people and Pokémon—through its magic rings.

After a strange and scary incident, they learn a story of long ago, when the rampage of a terrifying Pokémon was stopped by a brave hero. Now, the threat that has been bottled up for years is in danger of breaking loose again! Can Ash help his new friend overcome the darkness within…or will a dangerous secret erupt into a clash of legends?”
