Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’s Iain De Caestecker and Nick Blood at MCM London Comic Con

This weekend’s MCM London Comic Con saw Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Iain de Caestecker (Leo Fitz) and Nick Blood (Lance Hunter) take to the stage for an exciting Q&A discussion. The panel started out well, with Nick and Iain posing for a photo with a delighted fan before they talked about their favourite gifts. Iain said that his was a giant stuffed monkey, confessing that he sleeps with it.

When Iain was questioned on what instruction Fitz had been given on how to ‘shake a tail’ in the previous season, Nick was quick to jump in with the suggestion that he in fact learned to shake his tail feathers. Sadly, despite this, Iain could not be persuaded to show off his dance moves on stage.

Both actors seemed fond of one another, and their back-and-forth teasing was greatly enjoyed by the crowd, especially when Iain ummed and ahhed over who his favourite fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. actor was.

When asked what their most embarrassing moments on the show were, Nick talked about having to take his top off for scenes with much burlier crew members around, as well as wearing tight suits for CGI purposes. They also talked about the strangeness of reacting to things that weren’t really there or having to work with supposedly complex devices that in fact did nothing at all.

Iain was accused of being a prankster on set, using his iPhone to film slow-motion reactions to his ambushes of his fellow castmates. Clarke Gregg (S.H.I.E.L.D‘s Agent Coulson) was also noted for his attempts to trick his castmates into thinking that their character perished in an upcoming episode, since he’s more privy to the overall story.

There were also more serious moments as Iain was asked about portraying his character’s brain damage in the show. He said that he wanted to be respectful and so did the research, stating that he felt a ‘responsibility to be truthful’.

Ming-Na Wen (S.H.I.E.L.D‘s Agent May) came up several times in discussion, the actors affectionately making fun of her inability remember her lines or to remain serious. They joked that days when Ming is filming are intentionally left wide open to allow for her to inevitably delay proceedings, and laughingly stated that she would forget her lines even during readings directly from the script.

When asked about which other character from the Marvel Universe they would like to appear in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, both chose Robert Downey Jr. Nick even suggested that Tony Stark could mentor Iain’s character, leading inevitably to Fitz adopting his signature style with coloured shades and slicked-back hair.

Asked what superpowers they would like to have, both for their characters and for themselves, Nick said that eye-beams would make action scenes massively easier, while he’d personally enjoy the power to fall asleep anywhere. Iain, on the other hand, wished for the power to live without any sleep at all.  As for their superhero costumes, while Nick hoped for a Liverpool football kit, Iain said that he would like tobreak his character’s usual formality by wearing pyjamas along with a cape to strike fear into the hearts of evil-doers.

Nick ended the tremendously fun panel hoping for love triangles in future episodes since ‘they can’t make it too easy’.

We shall see.
