BBC America To Make New Version Of Douglas Adams’s Dirk Gently

Dirk gently coverMax Landis – son of John and the scriptwriter of the brilliant Chronicle – is to adapt Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams into a TV series for BBC America.

According to the BBC America press release the series will have, “an utterly fresh, comically self-aware tone… equally sincere in its danger, humour, violence and drama.”

The series is being produce by the same IDW/Circle of Confusion combo that is also bringing Brooklyn Animal Control to the screen (see our story here). That’s an IDW property but Dirk clearly isn’t, so it looks like they’re broadening their remit beyond just developing IDW projects.

Dirk Gently was previously adapted for BBC Four by Misfits creator Howard Overman, with Stephen Mangan in the title role of the slovenly, insolvent, abrasive and tightfisted detective who bases his investigation on the  “fundamental interconnectedness of all things”.

Despite a warm critical reception and decent viewing figures (the pilot got over a million viewers which is like Christmas for the Beeb’s highest-brow channel) only four episodes were ever made – a pilot and a series of three episodes – in 2010 and 2012.

Harry Enfield had previously played Dirk in a Radio 4 series in two series in 2007 and 2008, adaptations of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Tea-Time Of The Soul respectively. They were produced by Dirk Maggs, the man who has been responsible for all the radio series of Hitchhiker’s since Adams’s death.

So, who do you think should play Dirk in the new series? We bet some producer already has David Tennant in mind…
