Fear The Walking Dead Gets Greenlight For Second Season Before First Even Airs

AMC’s The Walking Dead spin-off Fear The Walking Dead has been given the greenlight for a second season before the first season has even aired.

The news was revealed at the Television Critics Association press tour yesterday, where previews clips of Fear The Walking Dead were met with a round of applause (this is significant because the hardboiled audience at the TCA rarely claps).

According to Deadline, the first six-episode season of Fear The Walking Dead is set to debut 23 August with a 90-minute premier while the second season, due to start airing in 2016, will comprise 15 episodes. The original The Walking Dead in 2010 mini-series was six episodes too so the shows are following an identical pattern.

Fear the Walking Dead takes place roughly during the four-week period when The Walking Dead’s Rick Grimes was unconscious in the hospital. But AMC boss Charlie Collier told the TCA that it is a “stand-alone series.”

The zombies in the show will be known as “the Affected” rather than “Walkers”. The show will explore and explain to some degree how the government, police and military respond to the outbreak and collapse of urban civilisation.

“By the end of season one we know the world has changed and it is the end of the world as we know it, but it not yet at the point where Rick woke up in Georgia,” said showrunner Dave Erickson. “We come to realise the world has changed but our characters are still insulated from all of what has happened. Part of what they will see in season two will be that.”
