Shameless’s David Threlfall Joins Ripper Street Season 4

Shameless star David Threlfall has nabbed a role a new regular character in season for of Amazon’s hit Victorian detective drama Ripper Street. You know, the one they rescued from the BBC because of low rating and which then became one the biggest attractions on the video streaming service late last year. (If you’re watching it at BBC speed right now, stick with it… season three starts underwhelmingly but improves massively at a rapid pace).

Threlfall will play Abel Croker, wharfinger, villain and keeper of other men’s secrets.

Better yet, all of the main cast will be returning: Matthew Macfadyen (Inspector Edmund Reid), Jerome Flynn (Detective Sergeant Drake), Adam Rothenberg (Captain Homer Jackson), MyAnna Buring (Long Susan) and Charlene McKenna (Rose Erskine).

The fourth season, which has begun shooting in Dublin, will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Instant Video with “criminal and personal dramas that will revive and escalate the intense complexity”of the characters’ lives.

Other new faces for season four (presumably in guest roles, though possibly also recurring) includeMatthew Lewis (Harry Potter’s Neville Longbottom), David Warner (pretty much everything), Killian Scott (’71) and Jonas Armstrong (Edge Of Tomorrow).

On top of that Lucy Cohu (Deborah Goren, she was the saintly woman who ran the orphanage and had a flirty relationship with Inspector Reid) and Derek Riddell (Constantine, the thuggish special branch officer) are reprising their roles from the first season.

Series creator and writer Richard Warlow said: “From our new studio set in Ireland, it has been a delight to watch this cast reunite and grow. As these new characters’ lives take shape on the page it is a daily inspiration to know that they will be brought to life by the most magnificent troupe of actors Ripper Street has yet assembled.”

The first two seasons of Ripper Street aired on BBC One which then cancelled it because of low ratings. Then in a first for a UK series Amazon saved the show for a third season which debuted on Prime Instant Video. It was such a success Amazon decided commission both season four and five at the same time.
