Syfy Developing Series Based On Frederik Pohl’s Gateway

Gateway_NovelTwo producers behind Battlestar Galactica and Falling Skies are teaming up to make a series based on Frederik Pohl’s 1977 sci-fi novel Gateway for Syfy in the States.

The book tells of humanity’s encounter with a mysterious, ancient alien civilisation, the Heechee, and the show is planned as an ongoing, weekly one-hour drama.

David Eick (Battlestar Galactica) and Josh Pate (Falling Skies) have collaborated on the adaptation and will serve as executive producers with Eick serving as showrunner. Martha De Laurentiis will executive produce through the De Laurentiis Company, reports Deadline.

In the original Gateway novel (it lead to a series of sequels), humanity discovers an asteroid scattered with the spaceships and alien technology of a long-dead but advanced alien race called the Heechee. Humanity renames the asteroid Gateway and through trial and error learns how to work the spacecraft. But the ships only fly on predetermined courses so the humans in them never quite know where they’re going. But as some of the destinations end up making the travellers who go there very rich indeed, many are ready to brave the unknown.

“We’re delighted to develop this fascinating first contact story with long-time partners Universal Cable Productions and Entertainment One,” says Bill McGoldrick, executive vice president, original content, Syfy. “Gateway is thought-provoking and unsettling, raising profound questions about mankind’s possible relationship with alien life.”
