BUZZ News Shorts: Star Wars Episode VIII, Artemis Fowl, The Muppets & More


• Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin),  Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) are all on the shortlist for a major new role in Star Wars Episode VIII. According to Coming Soon, “They will take part in a chemistry-read with Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega by the end of the month.” We’re pretty sure they don’t mean they’ll reading the periodic table together.

ReadyPlayerOne RD 1 finals 2• Another current actor shortlist is for the role of Art3mis in  Spielberg’s Ready Player One. According to The Wrap the top hopefuls this time are Elle Fanning (Super 8, Maleficent), Lola Kirke (Mistress America, Gone Girl) and, oh look, Olivia Cooke again (see above). Apparently at least two other unrevealed names are also on the list.

• Sci-fi thriller SFv1 has added Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen) and Luke Ford (Deadline Gallipoli) to a cast that includes Kellan Lutz, Daniel MacPherson, Teagan Croft and Temuera Morrison. Set in the future when humanity has spread out into interplanetary colonies, the film is about a crisis caused by a military contracting company and is currently filming in the Australian outback. • The BBC is set to make a four-part adaptation of China Mieville’s award-winning novel The City & The City, a crime thriller set in two fantasy cities that exist in the same space in different dimensions. [via ComicBookResources]

• Kermit’s new girlfriend for the new series of The Muppets has been revealed… and it’s another pig! What is it with that frog and his swine fetish? She’s called Denise and she’s apparently a head of marketing at ABC. Is that satire? Is there a head of marketing feeling uncomfortable? [via People]


• Kenneth Branagh has been named as the director of Disney’s Artemis Fowl movie, based on the children’s book series by Eoin Colfer about a 12 year-old millionaire genius criminal mastermind. [via Coming Soon]

• Environmental disaster movie Geostorm, starring Gerard Butler and directed by Independence Day/Godzilla scripter Dean Devlin, has been moved back from October 2016 to January 2017. Hopefully it’ll be out before global warming destroys the planet.
