Comic Villain Cast in Marvel’s Luke Cage TV Series

According to Deadline, Sons Of Anarchy’s Theo Rossi has nabbed himself a regular role in Marvel’s Luke Cage TV series as a character from the original comics: the villain Shades.

In the Marvel comics universe, Shades was an inmate at Seagate Prison while Luke Cage was in there. After escaping he became the supervillain Shades, after Ward Meachum – a rich businessman who hired villains to try to kill Iron Fist (a long-time comics partner of Luke Cage) provided him with a visor that emitted optic blasts, Cyclops style.

It seems unlikely that Cyclops-style optics blasts will fit into the grim and gritty small-screen Marvel/Netflix universe created by Daredevil, so maybe this will be a very different take on the character. Then again, three years ago we would never have thought that Arrow could have accommodated the Flash and John Constantine, so who knows?

Deadline says that Rossi’s character also has the name “Alvarez”, and that Rossi auditioned for a character called “Sonny”, described as “relentless and menacing, smooth and manipulative, street smart and controlling”. The article speculates this was a deliberate smokescreen. However, in the comics Shades was never officially given a name but we do know his wife gave birth to a boy called Victor Alvarez (who became another Power Man), so that ties in. And who knows, maybe in the show his first name is Sonny – so Shades’s alter ego could be Sonny Alvarez.

Meanwhile, Deadline also confirms that Rosario Dawson will reprise her Daredevil role as Claire Temple in Luke Cage. That makes it a hat-trick for Dawson, as she’s appearing in Jessica Jones as well. In the comics Temple was one of Luke Cage’s girlfriends. See, it all links up.
