Marvel’s Agents Of SHIELD: Exec Producers Talk Season 3

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD executive producers Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon have promised a monstrous adversary in the form of Lash, more romance, lots of answers in episode one and possibly some more Inhumans from the Marvel Comics universe for season three of show during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. But they’re remaining oddly coy about the name of a certain character while insisting there’s no big secret. Should we believe them?

Quick catch up. In Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD season three the big thing will the hunt for new Inhumans, with two main groups searching for them: Skye’s Secret Warriors and a government-run agency headed by an unnamed character played by Constance Zimmer. Ex-SHIELD agent Ward is now in charge of what’s left of HYDRA, Coulson only has one arm, May has been reunited with her husband and Jemma has been dragged into a mysterious obelisk.

In the interview, Whedon and Tancharoen remain vague about what Zimmer’s character’s called. “It won’t interest you in any way,” says Whedon. “Or it will, I don’t know,” adds Tancharoen. “Hopefully it will interest you once you come to know the character.” Whedon concurs: “Once you know the character it’ll be great, yeah.” Okay, we’re officially befuddled.

The pair also tease that we might be seeing some more familiar Inhumans from the comics. “You might,” says Tancharoen. “Always might, yes,” agrees Whedon.

One infamous Inhuman we do know we’ll be seeing is Lash who looks surprisingly like his monstrous comic counterpart in the trailer. Though Whedon explains the character of Lash may not be as loyal as the look. “I would just say that we’re doing our own take on it. There will be some elements from the comics for sure, but as we always do, we want people to not know what’s coming, so we’re changing it up a little bit.”

“And on a very basic level, we were interested in putting a monster in the mix, because he is not human and his looks are pretty crazy and scary. We wanted to put our team up against something like that,” adds Tancharoen.

As for  certain ex-comrade who turned out to be a traitor: “Ward is definitely one of their main problems,” says Tancharoen. “SHIELD is very aware of the Inhuman issue and Ward is still out there. So, he is absolutely on their radar.”

When it comes to Daisy/Skye’s new role as leader of the sub-team, The Secret Warriors, don’t expect that element of the show to arrive fully formed in episode one of the new season. “It’s going to be a very slow build to what you see in Secret Warriors,” explains Tancharoen. “It’s in very, very nascent stages when we first come into the season. Daisy [Chloe Bennet] is the only power person on the team.”

Whedon expands, “And while there is a desire to put a team together like that, there are so many complications and so many aspects to it that make it difficult that it will not be up and running right away. It’s something that’s a long-term goal of Coulson’s [Clark Gregg], but right now they’re in such emergency mode and there are so many things standing in their way. They need a solution to this problem that they don’t have yet. We’ll see that that desire to fill it is potentially a problem too because they don’t want to rush into things, so it will be a slow burn.”

There will also be more romance on offer. “One of the things that we have this year that we haven’t had before is some couples. There are some that have broken up in the past episodes, there are some maybe getting back together, there’s potential for some new ones,” says Whedon. “We do have a fair amount of people on our show, and when you’re stuck with people and they’re fighting the good fight, those heightened situations tend to throw you together. So I think we’ll be feeling a little bit more of that this year.”

They also promise that the fate of Jemma and the effects of the Terrigen gas that escaped into the food chain will be explained very promptly.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD season three debuts in the US on 29 September and will follow in the UK on Channel 4.
