Supergirl’s Red Tornado Is Very… Red

Here’s your first look at Iddo Goldberg as Red Tornado in CBS’s new series Supergirl. He’s very… red. Redder even than in the comics where he raffishly offsets his crimson costume with a flash of yellow. Remember back in the early noughties when the secret to making screen superheroes palatable to the masses was to make their costumes as far away from primary-coloured leotards of the comics? Now we seem to have come full circle and the screen superheroes are more comic-booky than the comic book versions.

According to Warner Bros: “Red Tornado is the most advanced android the world has ever seen. Designed by scientist TO Morrow for the US Army as the ultimate superweapon, he soon becomes sentient, posing a grave danger to National City, including the people Supergirl cares about most.”

Iddo Goldberg will be playing both Morrow and the Red Tornado in the show, but quite why the android looks like his creator isn’t clear. He certainly doesn’t in the comics.

Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist in the title role, alongside Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw and Peter Facinelli as Maxwell Lord. Dean Cain (from Lois And Clark) and Helen Slater (the movie Supergirl) will also be appearing in as-yet undisclosed roles.

Supergirl premieres on Monday 26 October in the States. A UK broadcaster has yet to be announced.
