Stellar Cast For BBC’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

The BBC has announced a diverse and starry cast for former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dreama 90-minute extravaganza to be directed by directed by David Kerr.


Maxine Peake (Silk, The Village, Room At The Top) will sstar as Titania; Matt Lucas (Little Britain, Bridesmaids) is Bottom, John Hannah (The Mummy, Atlantis, Damages, Spartacus) is Theseus, Eleanor Matsuura (Spooks, Cuffs) is Hippolyta and Hiran Abeysekera (Lion In The Tent) is Puck.

Elaine Paige (Follies, Sweeney Todd, The King And I) returns to television as Mistress Quince, Richard Wilson (One Foot In The Grave, Merlin) will star as Starveling, Bernard Cribbins (Doctor Who) as Snout, Javone Prince (Horrible Histories) as Snug and Fisayo Akinade (Cucumber, Banana) as Flute. Also starring exciting new talent: Prisca Bakare as Hermia, Paapa Essiedu as Demetrius, Kate Kennedy as Helena and Matthew Tennyson as Lysander.

Russell T Davies says: “This is such an exciting range of actors from stage and screen, from wild comedy to high drama, and some making their first ever appearance on camera. The Dream is coming to life like never before.”

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is set in the tyrannical court of Athens and the magical forest around the city. The BBC One drama is set to be a funny, exciting and will have as much attitude and invention as any theatrical interpretation.
