Stephenie Meyer Releases New Gender-Swap Twilight Novel

twilight_reimaginedForget Bella and Edward. It’s all about Beau and Edythe now. Twilight author Stephenie Meyer has written a new version of the first book in the series in which nearly all the characters have swapped sex.

She’s written the book to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the publication of the original Twilight novel. It’s called Life And Death: Twilight Reimagined and features a human teenage boy called Beau and a vampire called Edythe. They’re not quite the same personalities – Beau is “more OCD” and “not as angry” – but the love story is the same.

Meyer explains in the book’s foreword that she’d been asked to write some extra content for Twilight’s 10th anniversary. “I know there is going to be a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth because this new bonus material is A, not entirely new, but mostly B, not Midnight Sun.Midnight Sun, in case you didn’t know was Twilight written from Edward’s point of view, which Meyer abandoned after 12 chapters were re leaked onto the internet.

However, aware of  persistent criticisms that Bella was a bit of damsel in distress and obsessed with the object of her affections, “as if that’s somehow just a girl thing,” Meyer decided to experiment with swapping the characters genders. After converting the first few chapters she found in fun and surprisingly easy to write so she did the while book.

On the US magazine show Good Morning America, Meyer reiterated the similarities. “The further you get in, the more it changes because the personalities get a little bit different, but it starts out very similar and really, it really is the same story because it’s just a love story and it doesn’t matter who’s the boy and who’s the girl, it still works out,” said Meyer.

Almost all of the characters’ in the book have their genders swapped except Charlie and Renee, Bella and Beau’s parents.

Well it makes a change from inserting zombies into Jane Austen…
