Luther Creator To Script Escape From New York Reboot

Fox has signed up New Zealand-based writer Neil Cross, creator of the BBC’s Luther and writer of two Doctor Who episodes (“Hide” and “The Rings Of Akhaten”), to pen the script for its Escape From New York reboot movie. The company hopes to reignite the franchise in the same way it successfully re-invented Planet Of The Apes.

John Carpenter, who co-wrote and directed the original 1981 Escape From New York, is creatively involved and will executive produce. Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman are producing through their production company The Picture Co.

In Escape From New York, the Big Apple of the future (an inconceivably distant 1997 in the original!) has become a prison. When the president of the United States crashes into the decaying city, an outlaw called Snake Plissken (we thought he was dead?) is coerced into traveling inside to rescue him.

So, who would be your choice to direct? And who should play Plissken (it was Kurt Russell in the 1981 film)? And is en eyepatch essential?
