Daredevil’s Kingpin Is New Wizard Of Oz In NBC’s Emerald City

There’s yet another reinvention of The Wizard Of Oz coming to US TV, and this one is being directed by Tarsem Singh of The Cell, Immortals, The Fall and Mirror, Mirror fame, so you can bet it’s going to look extraordinary (and will probably feature very odd headgear). Called Emerald City, it’s a 10-episode mini-series for NBC, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, Vincent D’Onofrio – Kingpin in Netflix’s Daredevil – is set to play the Wizard Of Oz.

He joins True Detective‘s Adria Arjona as a 20-year-old Dorothy Gale and her police dog who are transported to a mystical land of competing kingdoms, lethal warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy. There she becomes a headstrong warrior who holds the fate of kingdoms in her hands. D’Onofrio’s Wizard is the enigmatic leader of Emerald City, a man of science in a world of magic, who rules through inspiration, fear and a tenuous accord with the grand witches.

The cast also includes Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Ana Ularu as the Wicked Witch of the West, Gerran Howell, Jordan Loughran and Mido Hamada. The series has been in development for a few years now, originally planned for the 2013-14 TV season. NBC finally gave it the green light in April this year under new executive producers David Schulner (Dracula) and Shaun Cassidy (American Gothic).
