UPDATED: BBC America Officially Green Lights New Dirk Gently Series

UPDATE: According to Variety BBC America has ordered eight episodes of the series, going on to say, “The series will follow the surreal adventures of the highly unconventional detective and his reluctant assistant Todd as they navigate one big metaphysical mystery per season.”

Todd is not a character from the books (as far as we recall). Also, that quote makes it sounds as if BBC America is already planning multiple seasons.

One of the producers Ethan David, has a history with Dirk Gently. He wrote a stage adaptation while he was a student at the Stowe boarding school outside London. Adams, who died of a heart attack in 2001 at age 49, showed up to the performance and befriended David. “I’ve been waiting almost 20 years for TV to be ready for this and to find the right person to do it for TV,” David said of the “Dirk Gently” series.

Original story below:

Although details are thin on the ground at the moment (okay, virtually non-existent) BBC America has just tweeted that the channel has has “greenlit original scripted series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” along with what’s presumably the official logo… although it doesn’t actually contain the words “Holistic Detective Agency” so we’re not even sure what the show’s actually called yet! Plus we’re not sure if the fact that the logo’s off-centre is a deliberate design choice (to reflect the off-kilter nature of the material) or the result of a marketing person not cropping it properly.

BBC America announced in July last year that the series was in development with Max Landis (Chronicle, Victor Frankenstein) adapting the Douglas Adams-written source material. The fact that it’s now Tweeting that the series is greenlit presumably means we’ll be hearing casting announcements soon, though there’s nothing on the BBC America press site as yet.
