HBO Nears Deal For Game Of Thrones Seasons 7 & 8

Hot on the heels yesterday of announcing the official US premier date for Game Of Thrones season six – Sunday 24 April (so presumably here the UK we’ll be getting it on Monday 25 April on Sky Atlantic) – came the news that HBO is close to signing a deal for not one, but two further season after that, taking the show to eight seasons at least. Seasons five and six were similarly announced in a block of two. [via The Hollywood Reporter]

And this is no mere industry rumour. HBO programming president Michael Lombardo revealed the plans at he Television Critics Association’s winter press tour and that’s not the kind of things bosses let slip unless their pretty damed sure it’s happening.

By season seven the show will be well in advance of the “A Song Of Ice And Fire” book release schedule so by season eight you have to wonder how much relationship the show will bear to George RR Martin’s plans for his series of novels? The author does work closely with the TV writers but would he really be willing for the show to pre-empt significant events in the books? Surely he wouldn’t let them become mere “adaptations” of the screen material? Will the two develop into “alternate realities”?

You can bet there have been many, many discussions about this between the author and the production team already. It’ll be interesting to see how it pans out.

Meanwhile, over at AMC, its president Joel Stillerman, says that The Walking Dead will continue as long as Robert Kirkman in the comics keeps on telling stories that fans love. “The answer to how long the show will go on in some way is directly correlated with the health of the storytelling in the comics,” Stillerman tells Vulture. “Those comics are firing on all cylinders. He still writes every line of dialogue in those books, and is as engaged as he was when I think he was sitting around in Kentucky writing the first issue. That is very much part of the DNA of the show. He sort of felt like, in real life, this goes on for a very long time. We’re along for that ride.”

Will either of them ever end?
