Phantasm’s Tall Man, Angus Scrimm, Dies Aged 89

Angus Scrimm, who played the iconic villain the Tall Man in all five Phantasm films, died yesterday – 9 January – aged 89. His final final film, set for release later this year, was – somewhat fittingly – Phantasm V Ravager, billed as the fifth and final Phantasm film.

Phantasm writer/director Don Coscarelli announced Scrimm’s passing on Twitter: “Phantasm’s Angus Scrimm passed away peacefully tonight surrounded by his friends and loved ones. Angus’s performance as the Tall Man is a towering achievement in horror film history. He was the last of the classic horror movie stars. Angus was a terrific actor and an even better friend. He will be missed. #heartbroken.”

Scrimm, who was six foot four inches tall, was born Lawrence Rory Guy in Kansas City  in 1926. He was originally an entertainment journalist (writing for TV Guide and Cinema Magazine among others) before turning to acting. He also wrote liner notes for albums by artists such as Frank Sinatra and the Beatles under the name Rory Guy, winning a Grammy in the process.

Aside from the Phantasm films he appeared  in nearly 50 other movies and TV shows, many of them horror – typecasting never seemed to bother him. These included The Wishmaster, Mindwarp, Subspecies, Masters Of Horror and Freakylinks, as well as a recurring part as Calvin McCullough in Alias.
