BUZZ News Shorts: Heroes Re-Cancelled, The Walking Dead, The Force Awakens & More

••• NBC has no plans for any more Heroes spin-offs after Heroes Reborn finishes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “That was always the plan, unless Tim woke up one day and said, ‘Oh, I have another chapter to tell.’ But I think we’re coming to the end of the world, maybe. Stay tuned,” says NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt. When pressed about series creator Tim Kring’s previous statements about other possible future reboots and spin-offs, Greenblatt was adamant: “He didn’t say that to me, so I haven’t heard that… As far as I know, there’s no more incarnations of Heroes coming.” All of which makes this sound more like a cancellation than a “one mini-series was always the plan” scenario.

••• Robert Kirkman has been talking about The Walking Dead season six part two to Entertainment Weekly confirming that things pick up exactly where the midseason cliffhanger left off, and the show doesn’t pull off one of its sudden leaps forward or backwards in time for a few episodes. “We pick up right in that moment. Alexandria is overrun. Rick and the kids are all covered in guts trying to get through the crowd. Everyone is where we last saw them, and things get worse from there…” Of the larger plot arc in this half season, he says, “It comes back to those plans of rebuilding Alexandria. Assuming some people survive, and it’s a good bet that some do, they’re not planning on leaving Alexandria. It’s a bump in the road, but there’s something special there, and they can turn this into an anchor that they can build upon. They actually have a chance at surviving long-term and building a safe place, not going from safety to safety to safety the way they have for the life of the show. This isn’t the prison, and ‘Oh, we gotta move on from here and find another place.’ This is something different. And from there, there will be other things that expand their world in new and terrifying ways.”

••• NBC’s office sit com set in the DC universe, Powerless, will feature known superheroes, though the biggest characters might only be name-dropped. “They’re in the background,” NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt tells IGN, elaborating on how the show will deal with the everyday superhero existence. “They’re wallpaper I suppose, as opposed to they’re not the main characters in the show, so you may see them blowing up a building out the window or something.” However, another NBC big wig, Jennifer Salke, teases, “What I’ve seen so far of the pilot, the main superhero that’s featured is not one of those [Batman or Superman] but it’s someone recognisable.”

••• Adam Driver, Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is hosting US comedy Saturday Night Live next weekend, and in amongst the trailers there is, of course, a lightsaber gag.

amber-heard-syrup••• According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros Pictures has signed up Amber Heard (The Danish Girl, Magic Mike XXL) to play Mera, an Atlantean, in director James Wan’s upcoming Aquaman movie. Mera will make her screen debut in Zack Snyder’s Justice League Part One, which begins shooting in April.

••• A fourth Narnia film, based on The Silver Chair, will go into production but it’s going to be a complete reboot from the first three films, The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, Prince Caspian and The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader. “It’s all going to be a brand-new franchise,” producer Mark Gordon tells Collider. “All original. All original characters, different directors, and an entire new team that this is coming from.” This isn’t quite as radical as it may seem, as the book barely features any characters from the previous stories; there are none of the Pevensie siblings in it, and Prince Caspian is an easily-recastable old man. Eustace returns from The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader but to be honest, he could be replaced by another character entirely if they wanted, though simply recasting is more likely. Will Poulter is certainly too old (and after The Revenant too expensive) to play Eustace again now.
