BUZZ News Shorts: Ready Player One, Dungeons & Dragons, The Leftovers & More

TyeSheridan-Cyclops-X-Men-Apocalypse••• Tye Sheridan, who will soon be seen as a young Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse, has nabbed the lead role of gamer Wade Watts in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. The story is set in a future world dominated by a vast virtual reality network called Oasis, created by a 1980s-obsessed genius who dies and bequeaths his fortune to the winner of a fiendish competition. In the book Wade starts as a podgy kid (though he goes on an extreme diet later on), so we’re wondering if Sheridan will throw himself into the role by binge eating all the pies. ••• Paramount has set a release date of 20 January 2017 for Vin Diesel’s xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. Paramount picked up the right to distribute the third xXx film after Sony distributed the first two. [via The Hollywood Reporter]

••• Director Guillermo del Toro’s big screen adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s infamous trilogy of children’s books Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark now has some writers: the LEGO Movie and Hotel Transylvania team of Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman coming on board to work on the script. The Hagemans previously worked with del Toro on the upcoming Netflix animated series Trollhunters. [via The Hollywood Reporter]

meg_abbott••• Liv Tyler has told Digital Spy the her character, Meg Abbott, will be back in season three of HBO’s The Leftovers, but no, she has no idea where the shamelessly befuddling series will be heading in its final year.  “[Showrunner] Damon Lindelof is secretive – he surprises us as much as the audience.”

••• In an interview with Collider at DICE 2016, producer Roy Lee said the new Dungeons & Dragons movie will take its inspiration from Guardians of the Galaxy and The Lord of the Rings (good news for fans of talking trees, then – ed). “This new Dungeons & Dragons will be a Guardians Of The Galaxy-tone movie in a Tolkien-like universe. Because when you think of all the Hobbit movies and The Lord Of The Rings, they have an earnestness to them, and to see something fun, a Raiders romp inside that world, I feel is something the audience has not seen before.”
