Batman V Superman Has Biggest Global Superhero Opening Box Office Ever

It doesn’t matter what the critics say, people want to see Batman fighting Superman. Lots of people. Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice has just registered the biggest opening weekend at the worldwide box office ever – $424.1 million.

That beats the previous superhero record set by The Avengers which managed a weekend global debut of $392.5 million. However, The Avengers had a staggered release.

Including all films, not just superhero ones, BvS had the fourth biggest worldwide bow of all time behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($529 million), Jurassic World ($524.9 million) and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($483.2 million).

While the critics have been downright scathing, audience reaction has been a lot better but still hardly glowing. In North America they have a kind of exit poll called CinemaScore where it managed a fairly middling B score while the audience poll on Rotten Tomatoes is currently 73% which for that site translates as “S’okay, I suppose”.

It’ll be interesting to see if the lukewarm response has an effect on the box office in the long run, or whether the mere thrill of seeing Batman and Superman have a bitch fight will continue to lure people to the cinema.
