BBC America has found its lead actor for its new Dirk Gently TV series and while the name Samuel Barnett may not sound immediately familiar he’s one of those actors you’re bound to have seen in something.
He appeared alongside Poldark’s Aidan Turner in the brilliant period drama Desperate Romantics; he was Daniel Stroud, PA to Ian Fletcher in the Olympics sitcom Twenty Twelve; and he’s had film roles in The History Boys, Jupiter Ascending and Miss Henderson Presents among others.
He joins Elijah Wood as Todd (an original character for the TV show) in the eight-episode adaptation of Douglas Adams’s Dirk Gently novel. The series is written by Max Landis (Chronicle) and folllows unconventional “holistic” detective Dirk and his poor, reluctant assistant Todd as they slowly unravel a mystery per season (which presumes there’ll be more seasons). Season one is set to debut in the States in autumn 2016.
Barnett doesn’t seem like an obvious choice for the eccentric detective, but he’s a fine actor and definitely an interesting choice. It could work…
