After Daredevil and Jessica Jones have managed to have distinctly different tones while still managing to feel like they exist in a shared universe (in a similar way to how the movies have managed to combine a whole load of different styles into a cohesive whole), attention now turns to Netflix’s next Marvel series: Luke Cage. What approach will this series be taking?

According to executive producer Cheo Hodari Coker speaking to ComicBookResources at the red carpet event for Captain America: Civil War, Luke Cage is set to be Marvel’s version of one of the most acclaimed and hard-hitting crime series US TV has ever produced.

“I would like this to be, I mean, I know this is heavy but, The Wire of Marvel television,” he says, “because we really deal with a lot of different issues.”

He also gave an idea of musical landscape of the series: “It’s very sophisticated. I mean, it’s got a ’90s hip-hop vibe, but it’s really forward-thinking. We have Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad doing the scoring for us. We have a lot of different musical appearances, but at the same time, we’ve got the Marvel action. We’ve got drama.”

Let’s put it that way… We brought it to mustard. We started there. We knocked it down a bit. Not so bright.” We assume canary-coloured pirate boots are out too, then.

Misty Knight actress Simone Missick also seems to be having a lot of fun: “She is so larger than life… It was like, every day that you open the script, you’re like, ‘I really get to say this today? I get to do this today? I get to kick ass today?’”

Luke Cage, which also stars Mahershala Ali, Alfre Woodard, Simone Missick, Theo Rossi, Frank Whaley and Sônia Braga, is set to premier on Netflix for your binge-watching delight on 30 September.
